  • Professor Emeritus, School of Nursing, University of Victoria

Dr. Sheets is founder of Memory Café Victoria. She is an affiliate of the Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria and an elected fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). Her research interests focus on gerontology and geriatric nursing—and in particular dementia, technology in home care, caregiving, and the humanities and arts in aging.

  • Over 28 years, Julie has worked in numerous recreation centers and in community services, coordinating programs for older adults, teens, preschoolers, low-income, and special needs.  She partnered with many community organizations and received grant funding to provide numerous social, health and wellness programs for older adults, such as Saanich’s Older Adults Strategy and Implementation Plan.  Julie also worked for Vancouver Parks & Recreation as a Fitness Programmer where she programmed classes and was certified in personal training, group fitness, water fit, and strength training.

  • Gwendolyn has worked in dementia care for over three decades, both as a nurse educator and a Frontline practitioner. As a result of working with hundreds of family and professional care partners caring for persons with dementia, she understands the issues that are important to them. Gwendolyn admires and respects the joys and sorrows that these individuals have endured as they navigate the dementia journey.

Today, Gwendolyn’s passion revolves around enhancing quality of life for persons with dementia, creating dementia inclusive communities, and focussing on the person centred care and not the disease. She has discovered that one of the very best strategies is to keep the person connected with the things they love doing.
